Presents For Girls
If the birthday present recipient is a girl, you could look for a medieval-style dress like Princess Fiona’s.  If you know how to use a sewing machine, you may be able to make one yourself.  Green “ogress” cosmetics and grooming novelties are also a nice idea: green hair accessories, mirror compacts, nail polish and stick-on gems.  You might find green glow-in-the-dark nail polish at the dollar store, or order it online at Amazon.com.

If the birthday girl likes Princess Fiona, she is probably a fan of strong heroines, and she might like books about other strong female characters.  How about The Paper Bag Princess, an enduring classic by Robert Munsch, or one of the Olivia books by Ian Falconer?  They’re both perfect for girls aged four to eight.

Green, purple and orange theme: For party favors, you can go with a green, purple and orange theme and stuff colored gift bags with treats in these three colors. Visit your local dollar store and pick up stickers, small toys, novelties and candies in these colors. How about glow-in-the-dark nail-polish or necklaces? Other ideas are: jelly beans, gumballs, pixie-stix, yo-yos, small plush or wind-up toys, bouncy balls, colored bubble bath or bath crayons, mini flashlights and novelty keychains. For girls, you can go with nail polish in these colors, stick-on gems, hair accessories or costume jewelry.

Custom Shrek t-shirt
If you can find inexpensive kids’ t-shirts, you could take a picture with a digital camera of each child after they’ve had their Shrek ears attached and their face painted green. Load the photos onto the computer and print each photo out on your home printer using iron-on transfer paper (available at most stationery stores). Iron a photo onto each shirt and hand them out to the appropriate guest as they leave the party. You will need a helper to take the photos, print out the transfers and iron them on to the t-shirts during the party but they can turn out really neat!

Jars of Swampwater
Purchase some glass or clear plastic jars and fill them with green apple candy rocks. Add gummy candy worms, licorice flies, marshmallow frogs and other tasty critters, and shake it all up. Print out “Shrek’s Swampwater” labels on your computer and affix them to the jars. You can have fun with the labels: “Shrek’s Swampwater: Good for what ails you! A few spoonfuls of this tasty mix of chewy worms, crunchy flies and green bilgewater will turn you a healthy green!” If you can’t find green candy rocks, you can use green licorice shoestrings as a base and label the jars “Swampweeds.”

Gingy decorator kit
Here’s a fun and inexpensive party favor for a Shrek party. Use a giant Gingerbread cookie cutter to make big Gingerbread men. When cool, wrap in plastic wrap and place in a paper bag with a packet of smarties, a packet of goodies, a packet of ju-jubes and a squeeze-tube of white icing. Make labels for the paper bags that say, “Gingy Decorator Kit: Everything you need to decorate your own giant Gingy!”

If you’re looking for a shortcut, you can probably find a local bakery or supermarket that offer a Shrek-themed cake. It’s also easy to dress up a simple sheet cake with an edible Shrek cake topper or plastic Shrek cake decorations. Here are some other ideas:

Shrek cake
You can make a Shrek cake at home without the need for a special pan or expert decorating skills. Bake a cake in a round pan, and pour extra batter into two cupcake cups. When the cakes are cool, arrange the two cupcakes on either side of the round “face” where Shrek’s ears should go. Cover the face and ears with green frosting (vanilla frosting tinted green with food coloring). Use a squeeze-tube of black or brown icing to sketch in Shrek’s features (the big wide smile, broad nose and bushy eyebrows). Use candy or gummy eyeballs for the eyes.

Swamp fountain
You can also forgo a cake in favor of a gurgling green swamp fountain. Chocolate fountain machines are widely available (you can pick one up for $25 at Walmart or Amazon) and pick up some green chocolate (colored white chocolate) at a specialty candy or baking supply store. You can also find green chocolate at Michael’s. Bake a simple vanilla cake colored with green food coloring and cut into chunks, along with marshmallows, vanilla cookies and chunks of banana, pineapple or other fruits. Hand out dipping spears or bamboo skewers and let the kids dip their own selections into the fountain. You can also put out bowls of green sprinkles, coconut, etc. for decoration.

Swamp sheet cake
This sheet cake is super-simple, because the kids do all the decorating for you! Bake a sheet cake (you can tint a vanilla cake green or make a chocolate cake) and cover it with green or chocolate frosting. Serve the cake with bowls of gummy worms and bugs, gummy frogs and lizards, crumbled oreo cookie or chocolate wafer “dirt,” pop-rocks, “slime” (translucent gel icing in tubes) and anything else that’s swampy and sweet. Have all the kids decorate the cake to create a gooey, gross swamp.

Swamp cupcakes: This is the same ideas as the Swamp sheet cake. Bake and frost cupcakes with green or chocolate frosting, and let the kids decorate their own mini-swamp or put cupcake toppers on the top!

Keep to the swamp theme with these gross-but-tasty party snacks and treats:

Swamp dip and tree bark: Serve a big bowl of guacamole with tortilla chips. If you can find Que Pasa black corn chips, that’s even better! You can substitute sour cream and onion dip with a few drops of green food coloring for the guacamole if preferred.

Lizard skins: Serve cheesy potato skins (homemade or store-bought) smeared with green sour cream (sour cream mixed with green food coloring) chopped chives and parsley.

Ogre sticks: Fill celery sticks with cream cheese and sprinkle with chives, dill and parsley. You can color the cream cheese green, too, of course.

Swamp-ghetti: If the kids are going to have a sit-down meal, you could serve green spaghetti with green pesto and garnished with parmesan.

Swamp juice: Serve Mountain Dew or green apple soda with a dollop of green sherbet.

Green ogre salad: Mix green jello cubes, green grapes, green melon balls and sliced kiwi and serve in a big glass bowl or in individual clear plastic cups.

Puss in Boots hairballs: Mix potato shoestrings with melted butterscotch morsels and peanuts. Roll the mixture into balls and leave them to dry on waxed paper.

Critter-pops: Make green Kool-Aid popsicles and drop gummy worms or bugs in each pop mold. Stick the pops into a chunk of green floral foam to serve.

Remember, to make clean-up easier you'll want paper plates, napkins and cups. You can stick to the Shrek theme by buying Shrek Tableware for relatively inexpensive at either Celebrate Express or Amazon.com.

If you have a Wii system, you can keep the little ogres and ogresses happy with the Shrek Carnival Craze Wii game (also makes a great Shrek gift). There’s also a Shrek karaoke CD that might be fun for them to sing along to. There are dozens of games the kids can play. We have listed a few below, select one or many and watch the laughter and fun! Here are some ideas for Shrek party activities that can be played indoors or out:

Earwax toss
This game has serious gross-out appeal for kids. Cut a big Shrek face out of posterboard, including (very important) his big ogre ears. You can also buy a Shrek Poster (like the one to the right) Tape lots of sheets of newsprint to the wall and then tape the Shrek face in the middle. (This protects your walls—the game gets messy!) Lay newsprint down on the floor in front as well. Mix up a batch of ogre “ear wax” by mixing cornstarch, water and yellow food coloring. The consistency should be firm enough to handle but oozy enough to stick to the wall (about 1 cup cornstarch to less than ½ cup water). Line the kids up behind a line taped to the floor (say six feet or so) and have them try to hit Shrek’s ears with the ogre earwax. If it’s too easy for them, move the line back a few feet and try again. You can use a foam egg carton to divide up the portions of ooze for each throw. Give a prize to the child who hits the ears most often, and hand out smaller prizes, such as stickers, temporary tattoos or candy, to the other contestants.

Frog pop
Print out 12 small pictures of Shrek. You can find one on the Internet and then print it out multiple times. Roll the small pictures up and insert one each into green balloons; then inflate the balloons with the picture inside. Take a big sheet of cardboard or corkboard and pin green balloons to it, pushing the thumbtacks through the tied end of the balloon. Draw a frog face on each balloon and hang the board up on the wall. Tell the kids that Shrek has been turned into a frog by a wicked sorcerer, and they need to pop the frog to release the spell. Have the kids line up behind a line taped to the floor and hand them a dart to throw at the board. When they pop a frog, Shrek will tumble out. They can collect their Shrek picture and redeem it at the end of the game for a prize. Note: Make sure you have a helper to make sure the game is played safely. All children should stay behind the line at all times, and only one dart should be used.

Swampweed fight
This game can be played indoors, but it’s much better played outside so the kids have lots of room to run around. Purchase a can of green silly string for each child and tell them they’re going to have a swampweed fight in Shrek’s swamp. The object of the game is to cover everyone else in as much string as you can while avoiding getting swamp goo on yourself. But you can’t pull any string off yourself or you risk being disqualified! The game ends when the last child runs out of silly string, and a grown-up must adjudicate and choose the winner. It’s a nice touch to give a runner-up prize to the child MOST covered in swamp goo, too.

Other ideas for Shrek party activities:
Lilypad swamp hop: Cut lilypad shapes out of green posterboard and lay them on the floor. Play a variation of “musical chairs,” starting with one less lilypad than there are children, and removing a pad each time.
Ogre ball: Make three ogre balls using balled-up newsprint covered by green tissue or construction paper. Have the kids line up and try to throw all three balls into a cardboard box or basket.
Pin the wings on the donkey: Using a poster of Donkey, or draw one on a sheet of posterboard. Cut out dragon wings from construction paper, blindfold the kids and have them try to pin the wings on Donkey to create a Dronkey.

Recreate Shrek’s swamp
Clear a space in a corner of the room and lay crumpled green tissue on the ground to make a swamp area.  Slit green garbage bags into long strips to create fringes.  Tape them to the walls or hang them from the ceiling and doorway so they hang down like a curtain of slimy weeds.  Pick up some plastic creepy-crawlies from the dollar store:  lizards, snakes, bugs and frogs.  Arrange them around the edges of the swamp.  You can also make simple balloon frogs by blowing up green balloons and taping them to two green webbed feet make out of construction paper or cardboard.  Draw a frog-face on the balloon with a thick green or black felt pen.  As a final touch, add a few of Shrek’s “Keep Out!” signs.  You could even play swamp sounds on a boom box to add to the effect.  You can find downloadable frog calls on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife website.

Make a medieval village
Make a banner at the entrance to the party room that reads, “Welcome to the Kingdom of Far, Far Away!”  Cut medieval arched window shapes out of black construction paper and stick them to the walls.  Cut “cobblestones” out of light and dark brown construction paper and tape a cobblestone path through the party room.  Make medieval notched flags out of green, purple and orange construction paper and tape them to wooden dowels.  Tape up official “proclamations” everywhere, with scrolled tops and bottoms and elaborate gothic lettering: “Hear ye, hear ye: the Kingdom of Far, Far Away hereby proclaims today to be [birthday name]’s birthday!”  Decorate the village with green, purple and orange balloons and streamers. Play medieval music, or Shrek soundtrack music, or a mixture of both.

Other ideas:
Make Shrek ears: Cut strips of green craft foam for the headband.  Roll up cones of green craft foam to make the ears and staple them to the headband.  Wait until each child arrives before safety-pinning the headband closed so that you can adjust each band to fit. Make them look like these if possible!

Face painting:  Pick up a pot of green face paint (you can find it online at Celebrate Express) and give each child a green face to match their Shrek ears.  You might want to find a helper to do this for you, as you’ll be busy with other party arrangements.  This is an easy face-painting job.  Just take a big makeup sponge and give them a few swipes of green to turn them into instant mini-ogres.

If you’re looking for something quick and easy, you can find preprinted Shrek birthday invitations online.  If you're ordering the invitations don't forget the Thank-you cards too! If you prefer to get really creative, here are some ideas for do-it-yourself invitations that will make a big

Shrek-ified birthday girl/boy invitation: Cut a round circle with two horn-shaped Shrek ears sticking out.  Cut a smaller circle out of the middle, creating a green frame with ears.  Print out a photo of the birthday boy or girl, ensuring it’s the right size to fit the frame.  Paste the Shrek-framed birthday girl or boy on the front of a notecard, and write the party details inside, or print them on the computer and paste them in.  If you or someone you know can use a design or photo program, you can tint a photo green and add Shrek ears.  Write “Come on Ogre! It’s a Shrek-tacular birthday party!”

Swamp ooze invitation: Here’s a different idea for an invitation.  Purchase some small, clear plastic jars at the dollar store, along with some little plastic bugs, spiders, worms or frogs.  Make up a batch of “ooze” by mixing cornstarch, water and green food coloring.  Fill each jar with ooze and drop in a couple of swamp critters.  Print the party invitation on sticker labels and affix them to the jars.  “You are invited to a party at Shrek’s swamp in honor of [birthday girl or boy]. Please accept this genuine swampwater as a goodwill gesture, and come to [party address and details.].”

Medieval invitation:  Make a medieval proclamation in honor of the birthday girl or boy by creating invitations that look like ancient parchment scrolls.  Use a gothic font on your computer and print out the invitation on 8 ½ x 11 sheets.  Write the invitation as though it’s an official announcement: “Hear ye, hear ye!  We do hereby declare that [birthday girl/boy] is celebrating a birthday on [party date and other details].” Stain the sheets with tea to make them look old, discolored and wrinkled.  When they’re dry, roll them into scrolls and tie them with a green ribbon.

Magic Mirror invitation:  Create a Magic Mirror on the front of the invitation by gluing on a square of tinfoil and a frame made from scrapbooking stickers or clipart.  On the inside, write the invitation in backwards mirror writing so the recipient has to hold it up to a mirror to read it.  An easy way to create backwards writing is to write the invitation frontwards on a translucent sheet of paper, then flip it over and retrace the writing.  Photocopy the retrace as many times as you need for multiple invitations.
